Premiere of Names, Not Numbers©, “A Movie in the Making” and a Conversation with ES Class of 2020 Participants

As the culmination of last year’s Names, Not Numbers©  Holocaust project,  created by educator Ms. Tova Fish-Rosenberg, the Class of 2020 participated in the first ever live ZOOM NNN CONVERSATION. While Covid-19 may have canceled the planned dinner celebration, over 200 alumni, parents, and students celebrated the powerful film, “A Movie in the Making,” in this altogether different but equally meaningful way.  The video, with approximately 2,000 views, received an overwhelming response and interest in learning about the Holocaust. Now, high school freshmen, Jojo Mizrahi, Victor Braca, Leah Lati, Shelley Safdie, Nitza Hanan, Shirley Jajati, and Emma Dayan joined Mrs. Barbara Zelenetz, NNN Coordinator and Liberal Arts Chairperson, to reflect on the experience of meeting and interviewing survivors and, with a sensitivity and maturity well beyond their years, they shared the important messages instilled by this program. Survivors Dr. Rene Alkalay, Mr. Max Lerner, Mr. Erwin Forley, and Prof. Smadar Rosensweig (on behalf of her mother, Yaffa Eliach A”H) left a lasting impression on these students. While the students and their special guests could not exchange hugs, there was a palpable warmth and appreciation that permeated the evening. This whole experience has been life-altering. Students Shelley Safdieh and Nitza Hanan said it best, “ Listening to the survivors and watching the film made us realize how it is our generation’s job to change the world and stop anti-Semitism. Names Not Numbers has changed our view on the world, and we are proud to be Jews.” This documentary will become history; it will be archived at the National Library of Israel, Yad Vashem, and Yeshiva University's Gottesman Library.

Wednesday night, December 23, marked a milestone for this year’s Names, Not Numbers© students as they were formally inducted into this incredibly important Holocaust program. After hearing from the program’s creator, Mrs. Tova Fish-Rosenberg, and program coordinator, Mrs. Barbara Zelenetz, proud parents and students watched a moving video of survivor Dr. Moshe Avital A”H as they prepare to meet, interview, and record seven survivors and create their own documentary.

Eighth grade students in this year’s Names, Not Numbers© program met the following week for a journalism session to learn how to craft thought-provoking questions that they will use when they interview the 7 Holocaust survivors for the documentary. After an introduction by program director Mrs. Barbara Zelenetz, students heard remarks from Rabbi Hertzberg and Rabbi Tsaidi. Students participated in a workshop led by professional journalist, Ms. Shira Hanau, who described different types of questioning techniques, especially those that elicit meaningful responses.
