OUR MISSION + VISION:
The College Guidance Department at Yeshivah of Flatbush Joel Braverman High School is a springboard for our students’ futures. Our mission is to educate students and families about the college admissions process, provide individualized support to all students about appropriate higher education options that suit their individual needs and goals, and work directly with students and parents as they navigate the college process.
The College Guidance Department is committed to supporting each student’s successful transition from high school to post-secondary educational opportunities. Our team fosters an environment where students are actively supported in identifying their goals, building balanced college lists and engaging in the college application process.
We offer the community decades of professional experience in education and college admissions that allows us to provide valuable and up-to-date advice to families while fostering positive relationships with all students.
OUR PROCESS:
College preparation at YOF - Joel Braverman begins in 9th grade. Through the Shifra Hanon Pathfinders Program, students are paired with a Pathfinders mentor who will help them find ways to engage in extracurricular activities both inside and outside of the school community.
The focus of freshmen should be on extracurricular involvement and prioritizing their academic work, specifically in the core subject areas.
In 10th grade, students will have the option to take the PSAT and discuss the role of standardized testing in the college process. Students are also working alongside their Pathfinders counselors to develop a resume and will receive support in selecting their 11th grade courses.
The focus of sophomores continues to be on extracurricular involvement and prioritizing academic work, specifically in the core subject areas.
In 11th grade, students are taught a full-semester college curriculum that will educate them about the college admissions process, best practices for researching colleges, understanding the differences between public and private institutions, writing college essays, finalizing resumes and more. These lessons are taught directly by the college advisors on a weekly basis.
In addition, YOF offers workshops open to parents and students on a range of topics including college application timelines, standardizing testing, and financial aid. During the spring semester, each family/student will have an official college meeting with their college advisor.
In 12th grade, students meet individually with their college advisors throughout the Fall to finalize a balanced list of colleges, complete college applications and receive feedback on their college essays.
YOF invites colleges from around the world to facilitate information sessions with our seniors every Fall. These informational sessions are run by Admissions officers at the individual colleges and are designed to help students learn more about colleges and develop relationships with admissions representatives.
The department will continue to offer workshops open to parents and students on a range of topics including college application timelines, standardizing testing, and financial aid.
