Sophomore College Corner

December 23, 2020

Dear Class of 2023 and Parents,
We hope that you’re having a great week. We are thrilled that nearly 100 of you joined us online for Sophomore College Night. We hope you found the evening to be enlightening and fun. Our goal for the evening was to provide information to help each student and family forge a path through the rest of high school that meets your needs. This will help ensure that you are in the best position to engage in the college search and application process when the time comes. As we mentioned, we look forward to beginning that work in earnest during the second half of junior year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. We can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at (718) 377-1100 ext. 214.

We would really like to hear from you! Please share your thoughts about the program by completing the evaluation here.
Electives Meetings
We look forward to meeting with sophomores next semester to discuss elective course choices for the 2021-2022/5782 school year. We will contact each student with information about their appointment after the semester break. Please be on the lookout for this message.
Special Offer from Compass Education Group
Curious about standardized testing? Want to understand more about the SAT or the ACT? Ms. Nina Kao, who joined us last week, asked us to pass along an opportunity to take a free diagnostic with Compass Education Group. Click here to sign up and enter the code “Flatbush” for a free diagnostic SAT or ACT.
Additional Test Prep and Practice Test Resources
Important Note: While we want to share this information, we also want to caution you about doing too much too soon, as Ms. Kao mentioned during her talk at Sophomore College Night. It is also important to note that we cannot predict how the testing landscape will look at this time next year. As colleges and universities make decisions about testing policies moving forward, we will share updates with you closer to the end of the school year. Please let us know if you have any questions about planning for standardized tests.
A number of organizations offer practice ACT and SAT diagnostic tests. While we do not endorse any particular test prep company or method or encourage students to begin testing before the second half of junior year, families often ask if we know of any other organizations that offer services. See below for links to a few options for organizations that typically offer practice test opportunities under test conditions. These organizations also offer small group and individual test prep and academic subject support. You are welcome and encouraged to explore these and any other options that you choose.
Compass Education Group - We do recommend the Compass Guide as a fantastic resource for testing information.
Princeton Review - Use the promotion code: YESHFLAT25% for a discount on select offerings
SAT and Khan Academy
Did you know that the College Board offers free SAT test prep through Khan Academy? If you haven’t already, we strongly recommend linking it to your College Board account. This is a very helpful first step on your test preparation journey.
Interested in the ACT?
The ACT Academy, ACT's official (and free) online learning tool could be a great place to start. We also have practice tests available for students in the College Guidance Office.
