The PSAT 8/9, which is produced by the College Board, tests the same skills and knowledge as the official SAT and PSAT/NMSQT, but on a 9th grade level. This assessment is more than a test; it focuses on the knowledge and skills that evidence shows matter most for college and career readiness.

Even though college seems far away right now, we urge you and your child to take this test seriously, as it could open doors to many opportunities. The results of this exam are not included in the student's grades or transcripts and are not reported to colleges. However, the results may be used internally for placement for sophomore year classes. By taking the PSAT 8/9, your child will access focused practice which prepares him or her for the future. Yeshivah of Flatbush covers the cost of the exam for freshmen.

Benefits include the following:

  • Customized skill based practice to increase readiness through Khan Academy, carefully crafted to improve and polish necessary academic skills;
  • A personalized list of careers and potential college majors and the ability to learn about them;
  • Access to the College Board's interactive college and career planning website;
  • An online score report, including projected SAT® score ranges, state percentiles, and the ability to sort answer explanations by difficulty and question type;
  • The opportunity to see which Advanced Placement classes the student has potential to do well; and
  • A dedicated SAT® study plan created by the test’s authors, including a review of results, practice questions, essays scored, and the chance to take four complete SAT®’s.

The PSAT 8/9 exam is aligned to the Common Core Curriculum and includes a Reading Test, a Writing and Language Test, and a Math Test. The Reading Test focuses on the skills and knowledge of taking in, thinking about, and using information. The Writing and Language Test is all multiple choice questions that ask the student to read and edit passages and sentences. The Math Test covers a range of math practices, with an emphasis on problem solving, modeling, using tools strategically, and using algebraic structure.

Score Reports for the PSAT 8/9 will arrive at school this spring for distribution. Students will also be able to access their scores online through their College Board student account.
