Once a Falcon, Always a Falcon

Teamwork. Leadership. Responsibility. Derech Eretz. These are just a few of the words we use to talk about athletics and our student-athletes at Yeshivah of Flatbush.

For over 60 years, we have been providing athletic opportunities to our students. Our high school now boasts eighteen boys sports teams and thirteen girls sports teams. Our students compete the Metropolitan Yeshiva League and in multiple national and international tournaments annually.

As we come up to one of the greatest annual events in American sports, the Super Bowl we wanted to use this issue, to present a few of our former student athletes in their own words. Once a Falcon, always a Falcon, thank you for being a part of Falcon nation.

Aaron Moskowitz (HS ’96) was the assistant captain of the YOF hockey team from 1994-96. Aaron said, “I had an opportunity to play with some of the best and forged friendships that continue on to this day”.

Aaron lives in Teaneck, NJ with his family is the Chief Financial Officer for Engineering Technology at Goldman Sachs in Manhattan. 

Jennifer Horowitz (ES ’81, HS ’85) was a member of the YOF swim team and has fond memories of her time in the YOF pool. She continues to swim for enjoyment even after all these years. Her experience on the team brought her many close friends, family (one of her teammates, married her cousin) and great experiences.

Caroll Dweck (ES ’08, HS ’12) was a three sport athlete at YOF, a member of the volleyball, soccer, and dance teams.

“I made priceless memories and built lifelong friendships. Being a Falcon was an integral part of my Flatbush experience, and has truly shaped me as both a competitor and team player in every area of my life.”

Howard G. Rothbort (ES ’83, HS ’87) is now chair of the JBHS history department. As a student, he was a founding member of the YOF hockey team (originally named the Flyers), playing goalie for the 1985, 1986 and 1987 seasons. Surprisingly, they made a playoff appearance in their first season, but lost to Ramaz. 

"Being a founder was a great leadership experience, we bonded as a team and made friends with some upperclassmen who we wouldn’t have otherwise."

Allan Silvera (ES ’65, HS ’69) was captain of the Leviathans as the YOF swim team was called in those days. He fondly recalled how teammates and the coach, Mr. Glazer would push each team member to be their best, a lesson he took with him way beyond his time in the Yeshivah pool. 

Alan has spent his career, first in the accessories business and now in real estate. He lives in Manhattan with his wife, Toby and is a proud father and grandfather.
