Last week, students in Mrs. Leah Wiener’s class 4-233 along with Assistant Principal Mrs. Debra Miller, visited Historic Richmondtown in Staten Island. The students have been studying early New York history, and the visit to Historic Richmondtown provided context to their lessons. Guided by an educator in period costume, the students had a hands-on opportunity to investigate how historians use primary source documents, objects and architecture as clues to life in the past. They practiced being detectives as they analyzed collections of artifacts and documents. They began to understand life in the past and drew conclusions from their analyses. The class also toured some of the historic buildings, including an old schoolhouse and family home, to explore what historic structures can reveal about the past.
