Boys Tennis Finishes Undefeated Season, then Secures Spot in the Finals

With dominant performance on back-to-back nights, the Flatbush Varsity Boys Tennis team closed out an undefeated regular season with a 5-0 win over the HANC Hurricanes on Monday night (5/20) then turned around and topped the Ramaz Rams the following night (5/21) by a score of 4-1 in the semifinal round of the MYHSAL Playoffs, with both wins coming on the outdoor courts at the United States National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens, NY.

It can be tough to play games on back-to-back nights, particularly if both night's involve long travel to the game venues. But, there was much on the line in both games (though the Tuesday night contest was clearly more significant than Monday night's).

Monday saw the Falcons make quick and complete work of the HANC Hurricanes. Flatbush won 1st Singles 10-1, 2nd Singles 10-2, 3rd Singles, 10-2, 1st Doubles 10-0 and 2nd Doubles 10-1. It was a total win, and capped off the regular season with a perfect 7-0 record.

Tuesday night was clearly a much tougher battle. Flatbush came in as the top seed from the Eastern Division, clearly a formidable adversary, but Ramaz was no slouch of an opponent, having finished 2nd overall in the League's Western Division.

The Falcon singles players for Flatbush off to a positive start, with Moe Sutton taking care of business at 1st Singles by a score of 10-5 and teammate Michael Dayan was slightly more generous to his Ram opponent in dispatching him by a score of 10-6.

Ramaz closed the gap, as they won at 3rd Singles, defeating Albert Chehebar who normally plays at 1st Doubles but was asked to step up with the absence of Ikey Dweck by a 10-6 score.

That left the two doubles matches, and they would decide who would advance to the finals - Flatbush or Ramaz. Both Doubles sets were back and forth battles, and drew the attention of all on hand as the Singles matches were already in the books. It would be the 2nd Doubles set that would finish first, and the 10-8 win went to the Boys from Brooklyn - Michael Chattah and Mark Shalam. It gave Flatbush the 3rd and deciding point. 1st Doubles would go to a tie-break, and it was Flatbush that took home that point as well as Richard Cohen and Sam Cohen prevailed 10-9 (7-3 in the tiebreak).

The boys earned themselves and an elated Head Coach Mike Gelber one more match on the season, and it will be for all the marbles. As Coach Gelber exclaimed, "we are going to the 'Ship!"

NEST NOTES: The semifinal win over the Ramaz Rams advances the Boys Varsity Falcons to the MYHSAL Championship Finals. They await the winner of the other semifinal being played on Thursday, May 23, between the Heschel Heat and the North Shore Stars. Date, time and site of the MYHSAL Finals is yet to be determined.
