Teamwork Nets Boys Volleyball A Second Straight Win

The Flatbush Boys Varsity Volleyball Team made it two in a row on Monday night (3/18) scoring another straight sets win, this time over the visiting Kushner Cobras at the Aux Nest in Brooklyn, NY.

It looked like it might be a long night as the Falcons struggled with their serves on the first two possessions. That changed very quickly – as did the tenor of the contest – when Ricky Sasson got the ball and served 6 straight points for an 8-3 lead. Ben Rishty won a joust at the net to extend the lead to 11-6. Michael Dayan served with power when he got to serve, and with help from overhead drives by Rishty and Sasson, Flatbush soon had a 16-7 lead; Kushner wanted timeout. It worked, breaking Dayan’s serve. The Cobras scored three straight points, and so Flatbush’s Co-Head Coaches Abie Silvers and Charles Harary wanted to talk things over. It was well timed. Leon Ades placed a ball deep in the corner for point number 19. Freddy Salem then came in to serve, and soon it was over. Set one went to Flatbush, 21-13.

In the second set, a late-arriving Alan Sassoon put down a spike for point number one, and Ades did the same for point number 3. The teams then traded points for a stretch, until Victor Terzi ran off five straight service points. But, when he lost his serve Kushner went on a run of their own. They closed to 12-10 and the Falcon coaches called for timeout. It resulted in a successful Sasson dink to take back control. Ades followed with a scoring spike. Then one again Salem was inserted to serve, and serve well he did, extending the lead to 17-11. Salem continued to serve the Falcons home, as he and his teammates finished off set two, 21-12.

It took until the third set, but Rishty finally figured out his serve. With help from his Falcon teammates, the hosts sprinted out to a 7-0 lead, prompting an early timeout from the Cobras. The Falcon lead moved out to 11-1 and the coaches began substituting freely. Kushner closed a bit. But soon Reuven Goldstein added to the lead with a well-placed drive to make it a 16-6 contest. Seniors Sammy Vaysman and Michael Gammal helped move Flatbush closer to the finish line. Rookies Netanel Salman, Michael Escava and Noam Weinstock got in on the action as well. Kushner stretched out the game, but the Falcons took care of business, taking the third set 21-16 for the 3-0 straight sets victory.

“The boys have been working hard, and they are really working together as a team,” noted Coach Harary, who along with Coach Silvers managed to work just about every available player into the match. “We are off to a really nice start,” pointed out Coach Silvers. “Now, we need to keep the momentum going as the schedule gets tougher.”
