Summertime Challenge at the Jersey Shore

The Flatbush Girls Basketball Program got an early taste of competition on Monday evening (8/26) when they took on a group of returning Hillel Yeshivah ballplayers as the two squads battled to a tie on the refurbished court on the Hillel campus near the Jersey Shore in Ocean, NJ.

Building on the experience of the previous week, where Head Coach Rozan Mizrahi-Loudon put a number of her prospective 9th and 10th grade players through the paces of a late summer workout at the Sasson home in Oakhurst, NJ, Coach Mizrahi brought together some of those same girls, along with a handful of returning upperclassmen for a final summer session - a game-setting scrimmage between her Falcons and select Hillel Heat players.

 Starting 5 Tip Off

Melding together two newcomers to Flatbush with a mix of 11 returning players representing all four grades, Coach Mizrahi expertly shuffled her players in and out of the game. Sylvia Mizrahi, Lorraine Levy and Simone Dweck - the Senior Class representatives in attendance - teamed with Junior Carole Cohen and Sophomore Lynn Franco to start things off. The level of play from both teams was intense, as a clash between players who are as familiar with each other off the court as they are on it should be. Nevertheless, Coach Mizrahi substituted freely throughout the night, giving everyone an opportunity, with quality action for each and every Falcon.

In the final quarter of play, with the score close and the outcome in the balance, the level of intensity rose notably. And, Coach Mizrahi was already in regular season mode, marshaling her troops as her team trailed with the clock winding down.

The Falcons found themselves with the ball, down two. Coach Mizrahi used a final timeout and diagrammed a play designed to even the score, It yielded the desired look, but the shot glanced off the rim. An opportunistic Falcon ran down the rebound and sent it back towards the basket. It caught the rim and rolled in to tie the score, bringing the Falcon bench to their feet with joy! With :07 seconds left to play, the defense denied the Heat, preserving the well-earned tie.
