Slow Start Stymies MD Boys Soccer

The Flatbush Middle Division Boys Soccer Team was victimized by a very slow start on Sunday morning (3/17), and though they picked up he play in the second half, the deficit was just too great, and the Falcons dropped the second meeting with the Magen David Warriors by a score of 8-3 at the YoF Elementary School Gym in Brooklyn, NY.

Action started in earnest right from the opening whistle, as first Flatbush – scoring in less than two seconds on an opening blast by Ben Hymowitz - then Magen scored after their respective initial taps. The game was barely thirty seconds old, and already each team was on the board. Flatbush looked in good position to score next, when Moshe Scaba touched a great centering pass to Ariel Eizenberg, but he just could not get his toe on it.

It was Magen that rang up the next three scores, each one off of Flatbush defensive miscues. Head Coach Yoav Fleischman made a goalie switch in the hopes of sparking new life into the Falcons defense. But, Magen upped the lead again on a shot that eluded reserve keeper Moshe Kopolovich. With 9:31 to play, Magen had a huge 5-1 lead. Aaron Vays nearly got one back as his drive of the center tap went just over the crossbar. The Flatbush defense solidified, but the offense still struggled to get traction. At the half, the Warriors led 5-1.

Flatbush showed new life in the second half, as Kopolovich made a few stops, and Vays rung up a goal to get the Falcons back on the board less than two minutes in. Avi Gutman was outstanding on defense helping keep the crease clear, and Flatbush had new life. Eizenberg has two good chances, but the ball ended up right on the Magen keeper.

Flatbush carried the majority of the play, and Vays kept peppering the Magen goal with shots, but they either went wide or were placed directly on the Warrior keeper. More than half the period was gone, and the Falcons were no closer, trailing 5-2. Flatbush was dealt a crushing blow with just under 7 minutes to play when the defense got bogged down in the corner and Magen capitalized. The cushion was back to 4 and only 6:39 remained in the game. Time eventually ran out on the Falcons, but not before one final hurrah. A penalty was called in the Magen crease just before the final buzzer. It was an indirect kick, but Hymowitz bounced it off a Warrior defender and into the Magen goal for his second goal of the game. Final score, Magen David 8, Flatbush 3.

NEST NOTES: The loss was the second in a row for Flatbush. After topping MDY in the season opener, the Falcons have now dropped back-to-back games, losing last Thursday at Barkai and now dropping the second of three games with the Warriors. Head Coach Yoav Fleischman and his boys will look to get back in the win column when they return to action on Sunday, March 24, when they take on the Magen David Warriors for the third and final time of the regular season, this time on the road at MDY’s McDonald Avenue school building. Game time is set for 11:00 am.
