Revenge Exacted! Falcons Win a Shocker in OT

The Flatbush Boys Varsity Soccer Team recorded its biggest win of the season - and arguably in the team's history - on Tuesday night (3/19) exacting a modicum of revenge for the loss earlier in the season by stunning the MTA Lions with golden goal in the overtime period for the 11-10 win at the upper Manhattan school in New York City.

The MTA Lions have been a perennial power in the Yeshiva League, and showed why during the teams' first match up on March 7. The Falcons had accomplished much that game, keeping the score close before three late goals gave the Lions a 5-goal victory. But, the experience showed the Falcons that they could compete with MTA, and this time around they had the services back of their two talented Juniors - Michael Soussan and Nathan Sidaoui. Could this time around be different?

It became clear early on that this would be a different game that the last time the two squads faced off. From the outset, it was a back and forth contest, with Flatbush and MTA exchanging the lead many times over the course of the game.
It also proved to be a physically challenging contest, with a handful of rather intense injuries during the game, with players writhing on the court from cramps and colliding knees that gave them a serious jolt. But, the players were able to come back on the pitch within a few minutes. The Falcons played solid defense, and over the course regulation, matched the Lions goal for goal, with Flatbush getting 5 goals from Michael Soussan, 3 goals from Abie Soussan and 2 more scores from Sol Laniado. At the end of regulation, the game was all even at 10-10. The boys were headed to overtime.

In the overtime, the teams would play an additional 5 minutes of soccer, with victory determined by golden goal - meaning the next score wins. Flatbush sufffered a blow when Michael Soussan was issued a yellow card, sending him to the bench for 2 minutes. His teammates picked him up, denying the Lions on their scoring strikes. With the penalty expired, Soussan was back on the floor, and he made MTA pay. With 2 minutes remaining in the overtime, Soussan struck gold! His strike gave the Falcons the one goal needed for the win.

Afterwards, an elated Head Coach Eli Amzalag reflected on what he considers to be the biggest win during his tenure with the team. " It was a real nail biter, but the spirit and camaraderie of the team was so strong. This will definitely go down in Flatbush soccer history. MTA clinched the championship last year or the previous one, so defeating them - especially in theor own building - is a major achievement."

Senior defender Liel Edri put it even more succinctly. "MTA May have come with 20 players, but we came with 20 hearts."

NEST NOTES: The win puts the Varsity Falcons back up over the .500 mark at 2-1 on the young season. They will look to make it two in a row when they return to action on Wednesday, March 27, when the host the Heschel Heat. Game time in the falcons nest is 7:00 pm.
