Off Season Action for Flatbush’s Football Falcons

The Athletic Seasons may be over, but Flatbush Falcon athletes never stop! Even though interscholastic competition will not return for almost three months, the Falcon football players were on the field and in action Sunday afternoon (6/16) with two separate teams taking part in the Inaugural Kids of Courage Flag Football Tournament at the Lawrence High School Turf Field in Cedarhurst, NY.

Kids of Courage is a groundbreaking volunteer-centric organization, dedicated to the support of sick children and their families, day and night, 365-days-a-year. Founded in 2008, Kids of Courage is committed to changing the way people look at illness, and opening up a world of support, hope and opportunity for every sick child and family, no matter how serious the diagnosis is. The KOC football tournament was organized and overseen by Josh Friedman and his staff, with the goal of bringing together high school teams, most who had participated in the Mesivta Football League this past Fall/Winter, for an afternoon of competition and fun to raise both awareness of and funds for fulfilling the mission of the organization. In addition, the participants were all joined on the field by NFL Wide Receiver Curtis Samuel (the jerseys worn by each player in the tournament were all adorned with Samuel’s name and his number 10 on the back). Samuel, a Brooklyn native and graduate of Erasmus Hall HS who played his college ball at the Ohio State University, has played the last two seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

Flatbush sent two teams to take part in the event, one captained by Sol Laniado and made up of Senior Class members from the Falcons Varsity team and the other made up of members from the MFL Regular Season Champion JV Team – led by Coach Teddy Beyda.

The format for the event was single-elimination competition. For the Varsity boys, Team Captain Sol Laniado ran for two scores, while Ness Bawabeh and Jack Dweck turned in quality performances in the effort. However, their opening round game needed overtime to determine a winner. With the first team to score advancing, it did not end in the Falcons’ favor. Nevertheless, the boys definitely enjoyed the competition. Laniado shared these thoughts afterwards: “Unfortunately we could not come away with the win, but it was definitely fun sharing the field with the boys one final time!”

Flatbush also sent a team made up of primarily members of the undefeated regular season JV squad. They were clearly the youngest group on the field, facing off against a team of players of which a number were clearly out of high school. Nevertheless, with Coach Teddy Beyda stepping out from the sidelines for the event to join the boys on the field, the team represented Flatbush well. Alongside Coach Beyda, the team saw quality performances from Bobby Anteby, Gerry Sabbagh, Jacob Kassin and Michael Smouha. The Falcons finished up on the losing end, but the opportunity to compete against a team of bigger, faster and stronger players will hopefully pay big dividends when they return in the Fall as part of the Flatbush Varsity Football squad.

In the end, it was a great day of football fun, with the added bonus of promoting awareness and support for a great cause. (Flatbush would like to send out a special hakarat ha’tov to Josh Friedman for coordinating this inaugural Football Tournament in support of Kids of Courage – Kol Hakavod, Josh!)
