7th Grade Boys Attack MDY

The Flatbush Middle Division Basketball Teams played 4 games on Sunday (2/10) and came away with an overall split on the day, with the 8th Grade Girls and 7th Grade Boys securing wins while the 8th Grade and 6th Grade boys came up short at the YoF Elementary School Gym in Brooklyn, NY.

 8th Grade Girls

The 8th Grade Girls opened the day of hoops, taking on the HANC Hurricanes in an early morning contest. The Falcons jumped out to the early lead and were never seriously threatened all game long. The defense was sharp and the offense moved the ball well. In the end, Flatbush came away with a solid 39-25 victory.

The 8th Grade Boys took the court next, taking on the Magen David Warriors on the first of three games between the rival schools. Much like the first time the two teams met, it would be a close contest that went down to the wire. After trading points early on, the teams reached the half nearly even. The third quarter was a different story, as the Warriors build a small lead, then extended it to as much as 9 points. Head Coach Mike Gelber gathered his boys and stressed a commitment to defense as well as trust in the offensive game plan. The Flacons responded, with Danny Hanon providing much of the scoring punch inside, finishing and getting to the line. Flatbush soon erased the deficit and pulled even with little time left on the clock. But, the effort to come back proved draining to the Falcons, and Magen David took back the lead in the final minute, securing the 4-point win, 46-42.

The 7th Grade boys were up next.  Coming off a huge emotional win at North Shore Hebrew Academy last week, the Falcons looked to keep on rolling.  Meanwhile, Magen was determined to avenge an earlier season loss to the Falcons and came out very strong pulling out to a 12-8 lead early in the second quarter.  The Falcons turned on their motor and with a barrage of 3 point shots outscored MDY 18 - 3 in the second quarter and held a commanding 26-12 lead at halftime.  In the second half the Falcons continued their dominance as the Warriors tried to cut into the lead.  Magen started to chip away, but the Falcons proved to be too strong and the lead was too large to overcome.  Flatbush closed out the game, securing the win by a final score of 49-40.  Leading a balanced attack for the Falcons were Isaac Cooper and Beni Keda who recorded 12 points apiece; Jacob Zeitoune added 9 points and Victor Ryba and Ronnie Chaaya contributed 7 points each.  Darren Kassin played very strong under the basket, collecting many tough rebounds.

The final contest of the day saw the 6th Grade Boys teams of Flatbush and Magen face off. It was a game the belonged to the Warriors from the start, as they jumped out to the early lead and never looked back. Flatbush struggled to score from the outset, and Head Coach Gus Kennedy’s boys were never able to find any consistency in their scoring. Magen David took home the win by a final score of 37-22.
