MYHSAL to Sanction League Play in Baseball & Softball for Spring 2021On Wednesday (4/21) the MYHSAL announced that it will be sanctioning League play this Spring in Baseball and Softball, releasing the divisional pairings and giving schools the go-ahead to start constructing schedules for seasonal play.

It has been a long time coming, and many schools in the League wavered
back and forth before the Principals’ Committee finally agreed to support limited League play. As a result, although a handful have chosen to remain on the sidelines, most of the schools that regularly field teams in baseball and softball are committed to playing this Spring.

With that in mind, both baseball and softball programs have picked up the intensity of team training, with the baseball team getting their first look at live pitching from the mound on Thursday afternoon (4/25) after months of dedicated work in the batting cage in the Aux Gym all winter long. Coaches Eric Hall and Bret Beard ran the boys through a controlled intrasquad scrimmage, and the hitters showed the benefits of the cage work as they made consistent contact throughout the game. After being rained out on Wednesday, Coaches Howie Fleischman, Yoel Goldberg and Albert Dweck will look to open the JV and Varsity boys' seasons on Friday 4/23 with an early afternoon doubleheader against the YDE Thunder at West Playground.

Additionally, while not organizing championship play for other sports, the League has given its support four “friendly“ competition in a number of other sports, including tennis, track and field, soccer, basketball and volleyball. Flatbush is one of the schools that is looking to schedule contests against League opponents in these sports, with the caveat that save for tennis these games will likely all be played in outdoor open-air venues.
