The Flatbush Boys JV Football team opened the season with a big win on Sunday afternoon (2/10), shutting out the DRS Wildcats while ringing up three touchdowns for the 19-0 win on the Lawrence HS Turf Field in Cedarhurst, NY.

It was the coaching debut for the JV staff, with Head Coach Teddy Beyda and Assistant Coach Sammy Dayan leading the young Falcons into only their second season of Mesivta Football League (MFL) competition. Though the team had just a few practices under their belts, the coaches were confident that their Falcons would be ready to play.

The Falcons showed from the start that they were more than ready. With Michael Smouha at the helm, he teamed up with veteran receiver Ikey Tawil to cap the first scoring drive of the game. Tawil pulled in Smouha passes for both the opening touchdown and the ensuing conversion, and Flatbush had the early 7-0 lead. That was the score at the half.

The offense wasted no time getting back on track in the second half. Smouha connected again with Tawil on a long pass play, then found Ronnie Novick one play later for Flatbush’s second score of the game just 16 seconds into the second half. Smouha reconnected with Tawil one more time later in the half for the team’s final touchdown (the conversion attempts on both scores fell incomplete).

Meanwhile, Flatbush received solid defensive play from the entire unit throughout the game. The Falcon defensive line kept the pressure on the Wildcat quarterback all game long, recording four sacks – Gerry Sabbagh led the attack with a pair of takedowns while Maurice Pardes and Bobby Anteby added a sack apiece. And, when the DRS offense was able to get a pass released, the Flatbush defensive backs made them pay, causing three turnovers on interceptions by Sion Dweck, Ikey Tawil and Jojo Sassoon.

Anteby was energized by the team’s play on the afternoon, exclaiming “our defense was amazing! We played a great game, and we will look to keep it going next Sunday.”
In the end, it was a complete performance and a great start to the JV Flag Football season!

NEST NOTES: The team will prep for their next game on Tuesday night at the Mill Basin Heath Club indoor turf field, and will look to get win number two on Sunday, February 17, when they take on the always dangerous HAFTR Hawks. Game time at the Lawrence HS Turf Field is set for 2:15 pm.
