JV Softball Connects, Opens 2019 Season with a Big Win

The Flatbush JV Boys Softball Team looked solid from the start and rode an early 3-run lead to a 12-8 victory over crosstown rival Magen David Yeshivah on Tuesday afternoon (4/9) at the McDonald Avenue Playground in Brooklyn, NY.

The weather has not been cooperative with the Flatbush JV Softball program this Spring, and Head Coach Howie Fleischman has had only two practices with his squad on outdoor fields in preparation for this afternoon’s season opening game with MDY (the others had all been cancelled due to rain). He knew the boys were enthusiastic about playing, but only actual competition would tell if these Falcons were ready to fly. The answer to that question was made abundantly clear in the first inning pf play.

 Flatbush Defense

As the home squad, Flatbush took the field first. Coach Fleischman handed the ball to Jacob Kassin. Kassin did not disappoint, as he pumped in strikes with regularity, inducing grounders and pop flies in the top half of the inning, setting down the Warrior batters without yielding a run.

In the bottom of the inning, the Falcon offense got to work quickly. Two walks and an error loaded the bases for Jakey Tawil, who came through with the first hit of the game, a 2-run double. Two batters later, Joe Gindi drove in the third Flatbush run on a ground out to second. At the end of one inning of play, Flatbush had a 3-0 lead.

Magen finally began to make more solid contact against Kassin, but the defense behind him was solid. The Warriors scored a run each in the second and third innings, but Flatbush answered in their half of the third, getting one of those runs back when Kassin hit a one-out triple, then came home on a Tawil RBI ground out. With three innings in the book, Flatbush was up 4-2.

After giving up another run to MDY in the top of the 4th, Flatbush added three more runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, with Flatbush getting hits from Gindi, Leo Rahmey, Isaac Soffer and Alan Shammah. The Falcons were feeling pretty good with a 7-3 lead in hand, but the 5th inning would bring a little bit of pressure from the Warriors, as they put up a three-spot on the scoreboard, closing the gap to just one run. How would the Falcons respond?

Flatbush answered decisively in the bottom of the 5th inning, Daniel Beyda led off with a single, the first of six straight Falcon batters to reach base, and scoring the first of five runs in the inning, knocked in by Tawil, Gindi, Rahmey, Jack Hanan and Shammah. Flatbush was in control, 12-6.

Magen would score single runs in the tops of the 6th and 7th innings, but they would get no closer. With runners on the corners and two outs, Kassin induced a ground ball to second for the final out of the game. Flatbush took home the season-opening win by a final score of 12-8.

Afterwards, Coach Fleischman was really pleased with the effort of his young players in getting the season off to a strong start. “The JV Boys Softball Season is a tightly packed one, so getting that first win is a very big boost. And, we will see this team again tomorrow, so this will certainly give us confidence going into that game.”

NEST NOTES: This is the first of four games over five days, and with only six games in the regular season every win is important. The JV Falcons will get right back at it tomorrow afternoon, April 10, when they take on these same Magen David Warriors at the same McDonald Avenue Playground venue, this time as the visiting team. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm.
