JV Falcons Secure Top Spot in Eastern Division

The Flatbush JV & Varsity Girls Volleyball Teams closed out the 2019-20 regular season in style on Wednesday night (2/5), sweeping a doubleheader from the North Shore Stars, with the two squads each winning in straight sets at the Long Island school in Great Neck, NY.

Fresh off the heels of a huge comeback win in the final home game of the regular season two nights earlier over the HAFTR Hawks (who previously held the top spot in the division) which moved the Falcons into a three-way tie at the top of the East, the Falcons knew that a win would secure first place (a loss would result in a three-way tie, and a convoluted tie-break to determine playoff seedings).

The JV Falcons set out to insure there would be no controversy, or stress on Head Coach Irene Eisdorfer, and made quick work of the Stars. The Falcons squad of Sophomores and Freshmen showed they have learned and grown since the first time the two teams met way back in November (in the second game of the season) when Flatbush needed three sets to put away North Shore. This time, the Falcons took an early lead and never looked back. The took set one by a score of 21-12, then completed the sweep with a 21-15 win in set 2. The celebration was on as the JV Falcons capped off a 6-2 record and sole possession of first place in the MYHSAL's Eastern Division.

The Varsity Girls took the court next, and rolled on with the vibe set by their younger Falcons. That vibe was key, as the Falcons were heavily challenged by the North Shore Stars in the opening set. It was a close contest, with the teams trading points down the stretch. Flatbush needed extra points, but eventually secured the opening set win, 23-21. Coach Eisdorfer's upperclassmen pressed the advantage, and dominated set number two, winning by a score of 21-13. Everyone contributed to the win, and the Falcons closed out North Shore in the 3rd and final set by a score of 21-18.
