Girls Hockey Continues to Grow

The Flatbush Girls Varsity Hockey Team dropped another contest Thursday night (5/2), falling by a final score of 12-2 to the perennial League power Kushner Cobras at Brooklyn, NY’s Aux Nest. But, that only tells part of the story as the Falcons battled the New Jersey squad from start to finish with a depleted squad and saw many of the younger players earn quality minutes that will certainly serve the team well in the future.

With the Falcons missing a number of their front-line players due to injury and prior commitments, Head Coach Elliot Weiselberg and Assistant Coach Barbara Stern chose to look at the situation as an opportunity for team growth, giving more playing time to the entire roster. Kushner took advantage, and though Goalie Zoe Sabbagh made a few saves in the first minute, the Cobras jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage. But for the coaches, this game was about development, and the Falcons never stopped playing at full-speed.

In the second period, Stella Lessler and Aimee Cohen teamed up to get Flatbush on the board, which was met with great cheer from the Falcon bench. And, though the Cobras led 10-1 after two periods of play, there was no quit from these Falcons.

 Defense Save Heskiel!

Coach Weiselberg was able to give significant game experience to reserve goalie Lauren Heskiel, and Heskiel kept Kushner at bay for over half of the final period. Meanwhile, the Falcons saw two rookies come through in their first hockey action. Lynn Pichotto proved to be a quality addition at both ends of the floor, and Raquel Keda chipped in scoring a goal in her first action ever!

The game finished as a 12-2 win for the visiting Cobras, but it was certainly not a complete loss for the host Falcons. The girls played with energy and passion – improving with every minute of action, and that will go a very long way as the program continues to grow.

NEST NOTES: One game remains on the Girls Hockey season, and that will take place on Monday, May 6. The Falcons will host the HANC Hurricanes, and hope to close out the season in style with a victory. Game time is set for 8:00 pm in the Aux Nest.
