Girls Basketball Gets a Head Start on the New Season

The Flatbush Girls Basketball Program recorded a first on Wednesday evening (8/21) when Falcon Hoops hopefuls gathered near the Jersey Shore and joined Coaches Mizrahi and Horowitz for a pre-season summer workout in advance of the 2019-20 season in Oakhurst, NJ.

Originally planned for Monday, rain delayed the first-ever girls basketball summer workout two days. But with clear skies overhead, 14 sophomores and freshmen ball players gathered at the home of Suzanne and Eric Sasson to drill and scrimmage under the watchful eyes of Head Coach Rozan Mizrahi-Loudon and Assistant Coach Sarah Horowitz. The backyard court provided the Falcon ladies with the ideal site for a pre-season training session.

Coach Mizrahi was clearly pleased with the turnout from her younger Falcons. "We sent an open invitation to our JV and Varsity returning players as well as the members of last year's 8th grade team along with any girls who weren't on a team last year but are interested in trying out in September. When I learned that our Junior and Senior members were still involved with closing events at their summer camps, I was fearful we would have a small turnout. That was not the case. And, the girls came ready to play!"

The girls trained for almost two hours, with the coaches splitting the players into three teams, scrimmaging at full speed. Coach Horowitz joined the girls on the court to round out the three groups of five. "It was a great time," Coach Horowitz said afterwards. I was impressed that the girls did not back down from me, and the energy on the court was fantastic!"

Afterwards, a tired Robyn Beyda, a member of the incoming Freshman class pointed out that this was definitely more basketball than she had played at one time all summer long. Returning Sophomore Alexa Greenstein shared, "this was so much fun! It was really great to see almost all of my teammates together. I am so glad the coaches made it happen."

If the energy on the court was any indication, it will be a strong season ahead that awaits these young Falcon girls hoopsters!

NEST NOTES: Special thanks to Coach Horowitz for securing the venue, and of course, great appreciation goes out to the Sasson family for opening up their home and back yard to the team. Kol Hakavod!
