Flatbush Football Kicks Off 2020-21 Interscholastic Competition in Convincing Fashion

A driving rain storm soaked the Flatbush boys varsity flag football team on Sunday afternoon (4/11), but if you ask the players they will tell you it couldn’t have been a more beautiful day as the Falcons opened the short spring varsity flag football season with a convincing 18-0 win over the crosstown rival Magen David Warriors at the Lawrence HS Turf Field in Cedarhurst, Long Island.

Normally, the varsity would open play in the Fall, where cold and rainy weather is the norm. With a mid-April start, the expectation was for sunnier skies. That was not the case, as the Falcons were greeted by rains that seemed to be moving more sideways than down. While the weather seemed to impact the Flatbush offense early on, the defense showed they were geared up and ready from the start. Seniors Bobby Anteby and Gerry Sabbagh put pressure on the Magen quarterback from the opening play and were relentless all afternoon long. When the quarterback was able to release the ball, the receivers were harassed all over the defensive backfield by Ikey Tawil and Ronny Novick. Though the Warriors struggled to advance the ball against the stingy Flatbush defense, the Falcons offense, led by rookie Senior quarterback David Cattan fared no better. As the first half came to a close, the two Brooklyn teams were deadlocked at 0-0.

At the half, Head Coach Teddy Beyda assessed the situation and refocused the game plan for the second half to account for the weather. The focus would be on ground control and short passes in an effort to minimize the impact of the wind and rain. The plan was executed perfectly, as Flatbush took the opening possession of the second half and slowly and methodically moved down the field. The possession was capped off buy a touchdown run from Cattan, who hit the edge, turned the corner and out ran the defense into the end zone for the first points of the season.

After another solid defensive stop, Flatbush’s offense again engineered a controlled drive down the field. This time, the ball was delivered through the air for a touchdown as Cattan connected with Tawil in the right corner of the end zone. Though Flatbush was not able to convert the extra point on either of the scores, the two goal lead put heavy pressure on the Magen offense. Their next two possessions both ended up with interceptions made by the Gani brothers. Jack picked off a deep ball to end a potential threat, and Harry sealed the victory with a pick-6 to ice the game. He was mobbed in the end zone as the Falcons celebrated the first win of the season - by any Flatbush squad!

NEST NOTES: Flatbush’s varsity boys flag football team will be right back at it next Sunday, 4/18, when they look to go move to 2-0 on the short season when they face off against another familiar Brooklyn foe in the YDE Thunder. Game time at the Lawrence HS Turf Field is set for 2:30 PM.
