Falcons Play Above the Net; Win Season Opener

The Flatbush Boys Varsity Volleyball team started out slowly then steamrolled their way to a straight sets season-opening victory on Thursday night (3/7), defeating the crosstown rival Magen David Warriors 3-0 at home in the Aux nest in Brooklyn, NY.

The energy was high in the Aux Gym as the newest edition of the Flatbush Boys Varsity Volleyball team was eager to see what the many hours of practice would yield when the games began to count. With the majority of the roster made up of newcomers, could the holdovers from last year’s MYHSAL Semifinal squad keep the Falcons flying at a high altitude in 2019?

At the outset, it looked like it might be a long night for the Falcons. Flatbush let the Warriors jump out to an early lead, with the Falcons committing a number of unforced errors that benefitted the visiting Warriors. But, Coaches Abie Silvers and Charles Harary were not worried. They had faith in their boys. That faith was supported by the Junior veteran Ricky Sasson, He ran off 10 unanswered service points, helped by a power spike by Leon Ades, a great dig from Michael Dayan and a sharp dink by Victor Terzi along the way to take a 13-7 lead. Magen closed to two points, when Flatbush extended the lead on a Ben Rishty spike to 16-12. Dayan served Flatbush to the brink with four scoring serves, and Sasson won a joust at the net for the final point. Flatbush took set 1, 21-14.

Set two saw Magen score first, but Alan Sassoon orchestrated 8 straight service points, helped by a joust won at the net from Sasson and another dink from Terzi for a 9-1 lead. A well placed ball from Ades pushed the Flatbush lead to 12-4. Terzi served the Falcons to 19-5, aided by a pair of Sassoon spikes. Sammy Vaysman closed out the set with a well-placed deep ball, and Flatbush moved out to a 2-0 lead on the 21-6 set two win.
