Falcon JV's Record 3rd Straight Win

On an unseasonably warmish February Sunday afternoon (2/24), the Flatbush JV Football team rode its defense to a 7-6 win over powerful Yeshiva Darchei Torah on the turf field at Lawrence HS to run their record to 3-0 on the season in Cedarhurst, NY.

Coming off two consecutive 19-0 wins over a pair of Long Island opponents, the Falcons learned early on that if they were to prevail, they would have to do it differently this time around. Darchei proved to be a much more challenging defensive squad than the schools Flatbush had already faced. Denying a team the end zone was familiar to the Falcons (having not allowed a score in their two previous games), but it was a new experience for Quarterback Michael Smouha and the Flatbush offense. The Falcons flashed the defensive prowess with a huge 4th down stop – capped by a last-second break up of a Darchei pass at the goal line by Jacob Kassin - just before the end of the half. By the time the game reached its’ midpoint, neither team had been able to solve the other’s defense.

Points were still at a premium as the game moved into the second half. It was the Flatbush offense that broke through first, on quality two-way play from Sion Dweck. With Darchei advancing the ball, Dweck came up with a huge interception to stop the attack and put the Falcons on offense. Shortly thereafter, the offensive line gave Smouha some serious protection, allowing Dweck to get open downfield. Smouha lofted the ball and Dweck ran under it. He pulled in the pass, gathered his feet and broke away from the lone deep defender for the first score of the game. On the ensuing conversion attempt, Smouha connected with Isaac Soffer for the extra point. It would prove to be a difference-maker.

With the sky darkening and the clock running down, Darchei was in need of a score. As solid as the defense had been all game for Flatbush, they buckled under for the first time all season. YDT finally solved the Falcons “D” and got on the board. Now, they were in need of a successful conversion to pull even. Looking to preserve the slim one-point lead, the Flatbush defense rose up and denied Darchei’s attempt. The score stood 7-6 Flatbush, and time was on the Falcons’ side.

Darchei needed a stop in the worst way. Again, it was Dweck that responded for Flatbush. Taking a direct snap, Dweck feigned a handoff and made a sharp cut upfield through the defensive line for a long gain, preserving the possession. Moments later, the clock expired. Flatbush held off YDT for the 7-6 win, keeping the Falcons undefeated on the Spring season.

NEST NOTES: In addition to the huge deflection of the Darchei touchdown attempt just before the half, Jacob Kassin had three sacks to lead the impressive Flatbush defensive effort. Also recording a sack for the Falcons was Maurice Pardes.

The Falcon JV’s will look to extend their winning streak next Sunday (3/3) when they take on Mesivta Shaare Pruzdor. Game time is set for 2:15 pm on the Turf Field at Lawrence HS.
