Boys Tennis Sweeps Its Way to Victory in Season Opener

The Flatbush Boys Varsity Tennis Team got the 2019 campaign off to a flying start on Sunday night (3/24), taking every set of the season opening match for a 5-0 win over the YDE Thunder at MatchPoint – Mill Basin in Brooklyn, NY.

Michael Dayan

Head Coach Mike Gelber’s boys took control of the match with dominating performances in the two doubles contests and at Second Singles. Sam Cohen and Albert Chehebar were perfect on the night at 1st Doubles, as they did not lose a game for the 10-0 win. The 2nd Doubles team of Michael Chattah and Mark Shalam were almost equally as successful, taking their game by a score of 10-1. Michael Dayan delivered the match-clinching point with a 10-4 win at 2nd Singles.

All that was left was to see if Flatbush could complete the sweep of the match. The falcons and Thunder players at 1st and 3rd Singles saw both of those sets go down to a tiebreaker. That was a bit of a surprise at 3rd Singles, as Coach Gelber believed that Ikey Dweck should not have needed to go to the tiebreak to secure the win. Nevertheless, Dweck put everything together in the deciding game, taking the tiebreak by a score of 7-1 for the 9-8 win. That left only 1st Singles to see if Flatbush could complete the sweep. This closeness of this pairing, too, proved to be a bit of a surprise, as YDE’s Maurice Mizrahi came in as the top-ranked player in the Eastern Division of the MYHSAL. Facing the Thunder Junior for Flatbush was Freshman Moe Sutton.

Sutton earned his top spot for Flatbush, but this was clearly a huge challenge for the young Falcon. Sutton did not back down; rather, he stepped up and turned in a top-flight performance, forcing the set to a tiebreak. Sutton took the early lead in the deciding game, and Mizrahi could not overcome the pressure. Sutton prevailed, 7-3, for the 9-8 win to complete the sweep of the season-opening match.
