Boys Secure Top Spot in East, Girls Earn Chance to Tie for 2nd Place

The Flatbush Boys and Girls Varsity Tennis Teams each earned wins on Monday night (5/6) at the United States National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY; the boys defeated the Rambam Ravens 5-0 and the girls defeated the Central Wildcats 4-1. The win for the boys guaranteed they will finish atop the Eastern Division of the MYHSAL while the girls victory meant the best they can do is finish the season in a tie with HAFTR for the second best record in the East.

 Motovich & Tarrab

For the Flatbush Girls Tennis team, the Falcons matched up with the Central Wildcats, taking every match except 1st Singles. Esther E Benjamin played solid tennis, but was matched up with a central player who was head and shoulders above the talent level of everyone else on the Wildcat team, and fell by the score of 10-3. Flatbush swept the remaining sets; Esther F Benjamin took 2nd Singles 10-3, Sarah Mizrachi took 3rd Singles 10-1, the pair of Kayla Motovich & Stephanie Tarrab dominated at 1st Doubles 10-0, Perla Berkovitz & Barbara Dayan finished off Central at 2nd Doubles 10-3.

 Sarah Mizrachi

Coming on the heels of another 4-1 win four days earlier over the SKA Lightning at Alley Pond Tennis Center, the win boosted Flatbush’s Girls into a 2nd Place tie in the Eastern Division of the MYHSAL. Against SKA, Esther E Benjamin won at 1st Singles, Esther F Benjamin won at 2nd Singles, Sarah Mizrachi won at 3rd Singles and the duo of Motovich & Tarrab won at 1st Doubles. The only blemish came at 2nd Doubles where Berkovitz & Dayan fell to their Lightning opponents.

Meanwhile, the Flatbush Boys continued to roll through their League opponents, sweeping the Rambam Ravens at the USNTC. Moe Sutton was dominant at 1st Singles, winning by a score of 10-2. Ikey Dweck and Albert Chehebar took 2nd and 3rd Singles respectively by identical 10-5 scores. Michael Chattah & Mark Shalam won their set at 1st Doubles by a score of 10-2, while Isaac Sutton & Richard Cohen took 2nd Doubles by the same score.

 Moe Sutton

This match kept the Falcons undefeated after having topped the DRS Wildcats by a 4-1 score on April 30 at the USNTC. On that date, 1st singles saw Moe Sutton pushed to the limit, but he prevailed 10-9 via a 7-4 win in the tiebreak. Michael Dayan had a significantly easier time with his opponent at 2nd Singles, winning with ease by a score of 10-1. Ikey Dweck outlasted his opponent at 3rd Singles by a score of 10-7. The 1st Doubles team of Albert Chehebar & Richard Cohen prevailed 10-5. At 2nd Doubles, the pairing of Michael Chattah & Mark Shalam came one game shy of completing a Falcon sweep, but it was not to be as they dropped the only set of the match by a score of 10-9 (7-4 in the tiebreak).

NEST NOTES: The May 6th doubleheader marked the end of the regular season for the Flatbush Girls Tennis team. They finished the Spring with a record of 4-2, earning a chance to tie for 2nd place in the division with the HAFTR Hawks (should HAFTR lose its final match of the season; they play undefeated North Shore on May 15).

The Boys Tennis team now has a record of 6-0. They will look to finish an undefeated regular season when they take on the HANC Hurricanes on Tuesday, May 14. The match is scheduled for a 7:30 pm start at the US National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
