Boys/Girls Tennis Teams Secure Undefeated SeasonsThe Flatbush Varsity Boys and Girls Tennis teams closed out the 2021 season in style Sunday night (5/23) when they each defeated their counterparts from Hillel Yeshiva by scores of 5-0 and 4-2 respectively at MatchPoint NYC ‘s Shell Road facility in Brooklyn, NY. In so doing, both teams put convincing caps on dual undefeated seasons for the Varsity Falcons.

The global COVID pandemic has put its stamp on just about every aspect of life, and Flatbush’s tennis team is no exception. It delayed the start of the season, and it limited the number of available opponents as many schools continued to opt out of interscholastic competition. And, while the MYHSAL gave its approval for match play, it decided not to conduct playoffs in tennis this season. As a result, Head Coach Mike Gelber set out one ultimate goal for his teams – to defeat all opponents. After taking care of their previous matches, only one test remained, stop the Hillel Hurricanes.
Coach Gelber knew he would be missing some of his key senior players, so it would fall to everyone in attendance to step up their play and turn in quality performances. The Falcons did just that.

The boys made quick work of their Hillel opponents. Top player Moe Sutton won by a score of 8-1, while Richard Cohen took the 2nd singles set by a score of 8-6 and Eitan Yehoshua won at 3rd singles, 8-5. Meanwhile, the 1st Doubles team of Eric Azrak & Bobby Falack and the 2nd Doubles team of David Dweck & Sam Sutton were perfect, each recording straight game victories of 6-0.

The girls would play 6 sets with Hillel, requiring wins in at least 4 of them to notch a victory. With regular 1st Singles player Esther E Benjamin unavailable, everyone else was forced to step up. Stephanie Tarrab drew the teak of filling in for Benjamin, and while she battles, she fell by a score of 8-1. But Robyn Beyda and Beverly Dweck stepped up to lock down two points as they won by scores of 6-1 and 8-0 at 2nd and 3rd Singles respectively. With a 2-1 lead, the pressure shifted to the three doubles sets. 2nd Doubles (played by Beyda and Dweck) won easily, 6-0, while 3rd double fell 2-3. That left everything on the 1st Doubles team of Jaclyn Tobias and Shelly Safdie. Theirs was a back-and-forth set, but the Flatbush pair eked out the 6-5 win, securing the crucial final point.

Congratulations to Coaches Mike Gelber, Robyn Dweck and Sammy Sutton and to every one of the Flatbush Falcons who stepped up in 2021 to record a most unique pair of undefeated seasons!
