Athletics Returns to Flatbush Sporting a New Normal

With school open and students back in the buildings, many of our students have been inquiring about our Athletic program - will we have one, what will it look like, when and where will tryouts/practices be held? All excellent questions. Thankfully, in late August the Flatbush Medical Advisory Committee met and gave the go-ahead to begin putting together a Fall athletics program - to be conducted in accordance with the parameters set by the Governor's Office of the State of New York for intramural and interscholastic activities. Click here to read the parameters.

Additionally, the Metropolitan Yeshiva High School Athletic League (MYHSAL), the League to which Flatbush belongs for general interscholastic competition, has implemented a plan to "flip the seasons" in 2020-21. Because we cannot train or compete indoors, the League has recommended member schools engage in the traditional Spring sports this Fall, with the hope that conditions will progress regionally to allow for indoor competition in the Spring semester. In short, we will begin tryouts and training in the following sports: Baseball, Softball, Outdoor Soccer, Flag Football, Cross Country/Track & Tennis this week and next. Basketball traditionally conducts tryouts at the start of school. While we cannot engage in full team scrimmages even outdoors, we will begin the tryout process through the use of individual skill performance evaluations in using outdoor courts. We will also conduct organizational meetings for the indoor sports such as Wrestling, Dance Team, Gymnastics, Floor Hockey and Ice Hockey that cannot train as a team indoors, but can engage in conditioning activities and individual skills in outdoor settings.

With that, tryouts for a number of Falcon teams got underway during the first week of school. Wednesday, 9/9, saw both Boys JV (at Marine Park) and Girls Varsity Softball (at Bensonhurst Park) along with Boys Varsity Football (also at Marine Park) begin evaluating talent in the first steps of putting together competitive teams. On Thursday, 9/10, it was soccer's turn, with first the Girls and then the Boys gathering at Comer Field Complex where Coach Elshan put the respective teams through their paces. (Friday, 9/11, had Boys Varsity Softball on the slate, and Sunday, 9/13, was set for the first day of Tennis Team tryouts for both the Boys and Girls).

It was clear from all in attendance that the Falcon student-athletes were excited to be back on the field, reconnecting and preparing for the opportunity to represent Flatbush in competition.

Given the nature of things at the moment, the Athletic Department understands that some students may not be able to attend school right away due to required quarantining. Rest assured that every student interested in trying out for or joining a Falcon team will have the opportunity to do so.

Details on tryouts/practices for the remaining athletic teams will be circulated in the coming days via the HS Daily Announcements.

Flatbush is adjusting to a new normal, and the athletic program is adjusting as well!
