4 Home Wins + 4 Road Wins = Perfect Regular Season for Boys Volleyball

It's simple math, really. Four straight home wins to open the schedule followed by four straight road wins to close the slate sealed an 8-0 record in the regular season, and you just cannot do any better than that! The Flatbush Boys Varsity Volleyball Team completed a clean sweep of the 2019 regular season, capping it with a 3-1 win over the Frisch Cougars on Thursday night (5/9) in Paramus, NJ, securing one of thee two top seeds in the MYHSAL Playoffs which will get underway next week.

 Set

The Falcon Boys Varsity Volleyballers showed the League from the outset that they would be a quality opponent, winning their first four games over a month-long stretch. But, all those wins came in the friendly confines of the Falcons home in Brooklyn, the Aux Nest. It would be a much greater challenge to keep that performance level going over the remainder of the season, in which the Falcons would be forced to play on the road the rest of the way. To make it even more difficult, the final four games would be played over the incredibly short stretch of 5 days. Would the Boys from Brooklyn be up to the challenge?

Coaches Abie Silvers and Charles Harary took the boys down Coney Island Avenue to get the run started, where their Falcons dispatched the YDE Thunder in three straight sets on Sunday, May 5. The next night saw the boys travel across the Brooklyn Bridge for a contest with the Ramaz Rams, and though it was a greater challenge the Falcons prevailed 3-1. Tuesday night saw the boys head east to Long Island where they methodically dismantled the MAY Eagles in straight sets. That win made them 3-0 on the road swing, and earned the boys a brief day of relaxation before the final game of the regular season.

Thursday saw the Falcons head westward for a tilt with the perennial League power Frisch Cougars. Though the 7-0 record already in the books assured Flatbush of the top spot in the division (Frisch already had two losses on the season), these Falcons were playing for a piece of Flatbush history. It was a slow start for the Falcons, though, as they dropped the opening set to the host Cougars by a score of 21-14. It marked the first time all season long that the Falcons dropped the opening set of a match. It sparked a fire under Silvers' and Harary's boys. With renewed focus, Flatbush controlled the play from that point going forward, winning the next three consecutive sets by scores of 21-16, 21-16 and 21-17; comfortable margins against a high-quality opponent. 8 games played; 8 wins in the books.

Afterwards, Coach Harary reflected on the achievement, and the turn-around the program has experienced in the span of just 5 years. "Crazy to think about it - in 2015, when Coach Silvers and I inherited the program we were 0-8. Now, only 5 years later we are boasting an 8-0 record, securing the top seed in the league." Now, as Coach Silvers added, "Next stop, Playoffs!"
