Alumni in Media
 

 

 

Yeshivah of Flatbush has a long and storied history of producing some of the best and brightest minds in modern Jewish education. Many of our alumni have gone on to careers that have changed American culture, the Jewish world and beyond. In this issue, we profile a selection of graduates who have made their mark in the world of Media and Communications as authors, journalists, writers, radio and television personalities.


Charles Harary (ES '91, HS '95) is a sought after lecturer, writer, radio and television personality. His weekly podcast,The Charlie Harary Showcan be heard on the Nachum Segal Network (NSN) network. Harary has been featured on CNBC and The Wall Street Journal Radio Network. He is a contributor to numerous print and online publications. 

Harary has always been a man of many pursuits, at YOF he was a three-sport athlete, basketball, hockey, and tetherball. He also served as Student Government Vice President.

He is a Clinical Professor and Associate Entrepreneur in Residence at Yeshiva University, Syms School of Business.

David Friend (HS '73)is the Senior Vice President ofCBS Television. He began his career at WPIX-

TV where he won an Emmy Award for “Best Local Newscast”. In 1983, he produced the first live coverage of the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks show.

He is a former editor ofPegasusthe YOF arts and literary magazine. He also served as humor editor of the 1973 yearbook, Summit.

He has an MA from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and has served as an adjunct professor of journalism at Yeshiva University and The College of Mount Saint Vincent.



Debbie Eisenstadt Mandel (HS ’69)is an author and stress-management specialist. According to her senior yearbook, she always had a gift for writing and self-expression.

Her books includeAddicted to Stress: A Woman’s 7 Step Program to Reclaim JoyandSpontaneity in Life, Changing Habits: The Caregivers’ Total WorkoutandTurn On Your Inner Light: Fitness for Body, Mind and Soul. She is the host of the weekly Turn On Your Inner Light Show on WGBB AM1240 in New York. She is a past contributor toWoman’s WorldandO Magazine.

Jake Novak (HS '88)is a supervising producer of the Nachum Segal Network’s, “Novak Now,” discussing news impacting the Jewish world and Israel. He is also a frequent guest on i24News. Novak previously worked for CNBC, Fox Business Network and CNN.

In 2015, he wrote the article,“What makes an elite school?”for CNBC Power Lunch, where he discussed the impact of his Yeshivah of Flatbush education on his life. He received his first taste of fame here at YOF when he played “Sid” in the 1988 high school production of “The Pajama Game”. Novak has a BA from Columbia University and an MA from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

Meir (Steven) Zeitchik (ES '88, HS '92)is a journalist forThe Washington Postcovering the business of entertainment. Before receiving degrees at Yeshiva University and Columbia University, he was busy writing amusing stories here at YOF according to his senior yearbook. He credits his YOF education with giving him the foundational skills he still uses today.

He was a 2003 recipient of The Arthur F. Burns Prize for Foreign Reporting. Before joining The Post, he spent eight years with theLos Angeles Timesand did reporting tours in Ukraine, Egypt, and Germany among others.
