Wellness is the new name for Physical Education at the Yeshivah of Flatbush. Comprehensive Health and Physical Education are complementary disciplines sharing a similar, yet distinctive, body of knowledge. Our curriculum is being rebuilt around standards that provide a consolidated approach to instruction with wellness as a common theme. Our goal is to teach students to take responsibility for their actions, stay physically fit and prepare for a healthy and active lifestyle.
At the elementary level, Physical Education provides all children with instruction in basic movement skills.  Classes are designed to create an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for every child, where each child will learn movement skills that will enhance his/her life.  These skills include the following:  balance, strength, flexibility, agility, general coordination, body awareness, laterality, directionality, posture, rhythm, manipulative skills and locomotor coordination.
We strive to develop efficient and effective and expressive movement in all children through our developmental programs in the primary grades.  Cooperative skills leading towards desirable social concepts through individual, partner and group work are taught before competitive skills.
The Middle School program is designed to build on the fundamental skills learned in the Elementary grades.  The focus is to increase physical fitness through the development of skills for team, individual and life-time sports.  Safety, strategy and sportsmanship are concepts and ideals stressed throughout the four-year curriculum.  Additionally, students are given a foundation in learning about and being trained in how to monitor and assess personal fitness levels.
The concept of life-long physical fitness is the central theme of the Middle Division wellness curriculum.  Please note that in accordance with Yeshivah of Flatbush guidelines, classes for boys and girls in grades 5-8 are conducted separately.
The High School Physical Education program is designed as the culmination of the educational process of inculcating in our students the recognition of how to live a healthy and active lifestyle and cultivate a positive sense of self.  Courses build on the foundation set at the Elementary grades and enhanced during the Middle School years to provide students with the skills to monitor and assess healthy personal fitness levels.  Students will explore advanced concepts in personal fitness skill development as well as skill development and game strategies for success in individual and team game settings.
In addition to the traditional gymnasium and outdoor activities, the Yeshivah of Flatbush is fortunate to be able to offer our High School students swimming as a component of the Physical Education program.  Under the instruction and supervision of our trained and certified swimming staff, students will learn to become proficient swimmers, allowing the school to work hand in hand with our parents to fulfill the mitzvah of teaching your child to swim.
At the High School, as in the earlier grades, the primary focus is on creating a knowledge base for life-long health and fitness and an appreciation for and hopefully participation in a lifetime of activity.  Please note that in accordance with Yeshivah of Flatbush guidelines, classes for boys and girls in grades 9-12 are conducted separately.
Wellness Guidelines 
Students are required to be in class every day. Absences can result in loss of important information and may result in a lower grade. If an absence is anticipated, it is recommended that the student talk with the instructor. 
Grading Policy
Students will be graded on the following five components by the percentages  as follows:

• Preparation
All students in every grade are expected to attend class wearing sneakers, with the laces tied.  Elementary and Middle Division students are expected to wear their regular school clothes.  Students in the High School must also wear the designated school Physical Education shirt, sweatpants or shorts (without zippers, buttons or belt loops), t-shirt and/or sweatshirt. Being unprepared will negatively impact your overall grade for the course.
• Participation
Participation is defined as actively taking part in the activity that the class is involved in on that particular day for the entire class period.
• Warm-Up
Activity is defined as actively engaging in run, game and/or stretching that generally takes place before the activity.
• Class Work
Students will be graded on such things as quizzes, tests, journals and/or writing projects as applicable.
• Sportsmanship 
Students will be accountable to conformance to rules, spirit, and etiquette of the activity or game. These include overlapping concepts:  fair play, sportsmanship, and character.
* Students who are not participating in class due to a medically excused illness or injury will be expected to complete written assignments that are assigned by their teacher.
Students are required to dress appropriately for activity classes. At the High School, this includes shorts/sweatpants, shirts/sweatshirts, and athletic footwear. Additionally, all students are expected to wear the gray Yeshivah of Flatbush Physical Education shirt for class. All jewelry is prohibited. 
Instructors have the authority to use their discretion on dress code as it affects student and staff safety.  
Medical/Nurse Excuses
All medical and parental notes pertaining to wellness should be taken to the school nurse's office for processing. Students are required to stay with their classes and are responsible for all material covered as part of that class. 
All injuries, no matter how small, should be reported to the instructor immediately upon occurrence. The instructor will decide on the best course of action to take.
Locks and Lockers (High School only)
Each student must provide their own lock for physical education.  They should always secure personal items during class time. Under no circumstances should personal belongings be left unlocked. Sharing of lockers is prohibited.  
Lost Articles
It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that all personal belongings are secured. In the event that something is misplaced or missing, please report it to the instructor immediately.
