What is Your Why?

WHAT IS YOUR WHY?

Excellence. Scholarship. Paying it forward. Those are just a few of the answers to why to give to your alma mater. Yeshivah of Flatbush has been at the forefront of American Jewish education for over 90 years. More than 40% of our students receive assistance from our Scholarship Fund. As a beneficiary of our institution, we hope you pay it forward to another student. Below you will find inspiring stories of "why" our alumni give back. Our donors span across generations of YOF graduating classes and we hope you join them in giving back to the Yeshivah of Flatbush.

Lawrence (ES ’47) and Suzanne Fishman: Lawrence is a proud Yeshivah of Flatbush graduate who believes deeply in honoring the past while looking toward the future. To honor this commitment, Suzanne and Lawrence have endowed the Names, Not Numbers© (NNN) program for the eighth grade students. "Names, Not Numbers was just the kind of project we were looking for. We recognized the tremendous effects this project has had on all of the participants - students, parents and us. Thank you to the Yeshivah and the students who participate in affording us the opportunity to carry out a mitzvah with great enthusiasm." Read more about the Flatbush Forever Fund.

Richard Chera (ES ‘88) is an alum and a father of current students. In their home, YOF is like a member of the family. He has seen the school grow and change. When the time came to build our new high school building, Richard knew exactly where he wanted to make an impact. With his business partner, Jeffrey Sutton, a Flatbush parent himself, they chose to dedicate the new College Guidance Center with the "Blueprint for Excellence" Capital Campaign. College Guidance is a student-centered partnership starting already in ninth grade. The staff supports students and families in all aspects of their college process, striving to connect each student with the college that best fits his or her needs.

Penina Roth (HS ’09) is one of many alums who consider Flatbush a home away from home. Not only is she a graduate, but she is also a beloved kindergarten teacher in the Elementary School. She just celebrated her 10th high school reunion earlier this year and joined another very important group - she became a donor, making a meaningful gift with her class to dedicate a classroom mezuzah. Funds raised by the Alumni Campaign support the Scholarship Fund and is a steady source for the $12,000,000 that YOF awards every year to more than 400 families.

Abie Hidary (ES ’91, HS ’95), Eddie Hidary (ES ‘95, HS ‘99) Grace (Hidary) Tobias (ES '98) and Steven Hidary (ES ‘02, HS ‘06) "Our family has a deep history with YOF," said Steven Hidary, "It started with our parents, Esther and Jack. Dad served as a Trustee for many years and mom was Ladies Auxiliary President. My wife, siblings and I are all YOF alumni and almost all of our children are current students. My oldest brother, Abie, married to Yvette, also a school alum, is the current YOF President. We value the opportunities we were granted by the education we received and want to pay it forward. The school's Annual Fund is one of our family’s highest giving priorities as it covers areas of great need and supports all students. Volunteering and giving back is at the core of our values as a family and we are happy to be able to support the yeshivah".
